2016/17 Season Review: October
After an unbeaten start the season, October had the prospect of being slightly more challenging. An away trip to Swindon Town Ladies followed by the home visits of West Ham United Ladies and Crystal Palace Ladies which could have been banana skins for City Ladies, but they were thankfully avoided.
2nd October 2016: Queens Park Rangers 1 – 4 Cardiff City Ladies (C Williams 8’, Bartlett 71’, 74’ 90+3)
A hat trick from Kerry Bartlett sealed another three points for City Ladies on their first London trip of the season. They started the game strongly and took the lead early on from a Cori Williams effort which was fired into the top corner of the net. Despite the pressure though Cardiff were unable to add any more goals to their tally until late in the second half. It was in the final 20 minutes that the screw began to turn as the home side began to tire and Bartlett got her first of the game when she tapped in following a shot that was parried to her feet, before netting her second minutes later when she diverted a low cross into the back of the net. Deep into stoppage time Bartlett secured the match ball with another tap in from a parried effort, and the long journey home was a happy one with three points in the bag.
Cardiff City Ladies: O’Sullivan, Bartlett, Britton, Chivers, Evans, Green, Llewellyn, Price (Lake 46’), Suominen (Evan-Watkins 86’), Tinman (C Lloyd 46’), C Williams
6th October 2016: Swindon Town Ladies 0 – 4 Cardiff City Ladies (Bartlett, Chivers, C Lloyd (2))
Following on from the 4-1 win against Queens Park Rangers Ladies, City Ladies had a long midweek trip to Swindon Town. It was another potentially difficult fixture but the players were ruthless in attack and formidable in defence, keeping a clean sheet. Whilst the long away trip on a Thursday night may not have been one they were looking forward to when the fixtures came out, but the Severn Bridge toll wouldn’t have hurt quite so much with another three points in the bag.
Cardiff City Ladies: O’Sullivan, Bartlett (Tinman 60’), Britton, Chivers, Evans, Green, Llewellyn, C Lloyd, Miles, Suominen (Lake 70’), C Williams (Morris 80’)
9th October 2016: Cardiff City Ladies 3 – 0 West Ham United Ladies (C Williams 13’, Chivers 65’, Green 82’)
After the two long away trips to start the month, it was Cardiff’s turn to play host to a side making a long trip as they welcomed West Ham United Ladies to the CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence. In the opening exchanges neither side could create any clear cut chances until the 13th minute when a lofted through ball cleared the West Ham back line and was collected by Cori Williams who comfortably slotted the ball past the on rushing keeper. That is how the score stayed up to the half time whistle but two changes at half time from manager Gary Green made all the difference in the second half. Chivers and Miles came on at the break and City Ladies dominated the second half. Cori Williams came close from a corner in the first minute after the restart and Abbie Britton hit the bar moments later, before the lead was doubled by Chivers after a route one pass from O’Sullivan’s goal kick, flicked on by Bartlett, with Chivers finishing down to the keepers left. In the 82nd minute came the goal of the day. Michelle Green picked the ball up with her back to goal twenty yards out, before turning and wrapping her foot around the ball, catching everyone by surprise, with the keeper unable to keep the curling effort from creeping inside of the post and moving Cardiff up to second in the table.
Cardiff City Ladies: O’Sullivan, Bartlett, Britton, Davies (Chivers 46’), Evans, Green, Llewellyn, C Lloyd, Suominen, Tinman (Miles 46’), C Williams (Evan-Watkins 84’)
23rd October 2016: Cardiff City Ladies – Larkhall Athletic Ladies (Home Walkover)
Larkhall Athletic Ladies were unable to field a side for the second round match in the WPL Cup and Cardiff City Ladies were given the path into the third round to play Chichester City Ladies.
30th October 2016: Cardiff City Ladies 3 – 2 Crystal Palace Ladies (C Lloyd 35’, 87’, C Williams 60’)
The month finished with another home game to another London side. This time it was Crystal Palace Ladies who travelled to South Wales and they took the lead in the first half before a goal mouth scramble 10 minutes before half time resulted in Chloe Lloyd being able to get a foot to the ball and equalise for Cardiff. Twice City Ladies would have to come from a goal behind in this game after Palace took the lead again early in the second half but Cori Williams was able to tie the game up once again, slotting the ball underneath the Palace keeper. The game looked as though it would be heading for a draw until Palace were reduced to 10 women when Burch Waldron was sent off for being the last woman when committing a foul, and Chloe Lloyd scored her second of the game with a brilliant free kick into the top right corner.
Cardiff City Ladies: O’Sullivan, Allen (B Lloyd 55’), Bartlett, Britton, Chivers (Tinman 55’), Evans, Green, Llewellyn (L Williams 55’), C Lloyd, Suominen, C Williams
