2016/17 Season Review: March

Cardiff City Ladies played every single game in March away from home, one of them the crucial cup semi-final against last season’s winners Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, would Cardiff reach the final?

Sunday 5th March 2017: Tottenham Hotspur Ladies 3 – 0 Cardiff City Ladies

With number one keeper Laura O’Sullivan and others away on international duty it was always going to be a difficult ask for Cardiff City Ladies to beat the league leaders and last year’s cup winners. The women selected by manager Gary Green gave everything they had but sadly it wasn’t to be as Tottenham Hotspur Ladies were too strong. Goals from Wendy Martin, Leah Rawle and Nikita Whinnett gave the home side a 3-0 victory and a path to the final once more.

Sunday 12th March 2017: C & K Basildon Ladies 3 – 2 Cardiff City Ladies (Bartlett, Chivers)

After heartbreak in the cup semi-final, Cardiff City Ladies returned to league action with a trip to C & K Basildon. A win was crucial to keep up the league challenge and things looked to be going well with Cardiff finding themselves two up after just twelve minutes. A terrific comeback from Basildon Ladies though resulted in a 93rd minute winner for the home side, and Cardiff City Ladies were left with their second defeat in a row.

Sunday 26th March 2017: Portsmouth Ladies 1 – 5 Cardiff City Ladies (Bartlett (2), Chivers (2), L Williams)

After a disappointing month so far, City Ladies were in desperate need of a good result and responded perfectly against Portsmouth Ladies. A brace each for Bartlett and Chivers supplemented by one from Laura Williams gave Cardiff a five goal lead with Laura O’Sullivan keeping a clean sheet until the 89th minute when Samantha Quayle scored a consolation for Portsmouth. There were six games left, could the title still be achieved?
