Cardiff City Ladies suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Gillingham Women in their latest FAWNL match.

A first half goal from Phoebe Leitch was enough to give Gillingham all three points in Ystrad Mynach, as Cardiff couldn’t quite get into their rhythm.

Gillingham had the first chance of the game, as they almost caught Laura O’Sullivan out from a corner, but the delivery thankfully hit the post.

On the 25th minute, the deadlock was broken as Cardiff were punished for a mistake at the back. Attempting to play the ball out from the back, Cardiff were caught on the ball and with O’Sullivan off her line, the ball fell to Leitch who had an easy task of passing it into an empty net.

After the goal Cardiff came back into the game and started piling pressure on the visitors defence. Kaitlyn Morgan put through Ellie Sargent who had the pace to beat the Gillingham defenders to the ball, but her first time effort was well saved by Cara Davies.

Morgan then had the best chance of the game for the hosts. Sargent once again used her pace to get into the box before squaring it to Morgan who could only hit her shot at Davies in the Gillingham net.

In the second half, Cardiff took control of the game and tried to attack, but chances were few and far between and Gillingham were more than happy to sit back and try to hit on the break.

Substitute Zoe Smith hit the crossbar with her cross with virtually her first touch, while Kelly Isaac had a free kick well and an ambitious effort saved well by Davies.

Despite the constant pressure from Cardiff, Gillingham held on and came away with all three points.

Cardiff will now look to get back to winning ways next Sunday when they take on London Bees away from home.
