Cardiff City Ladies suffered heartbreak as Plymouth Argyle Women snatched a last-minute winner at the Manadon Sports & Community Hub.

Chloe Lloyd’s penalty gave Cardiff the lead in the second half, but late goals by Kayley Lane & Mari Ward gave Plymouth the vital three points in the race for survival.

In the first half, both sides saw plenty of the ball, but neither had any clear-cut chances to break the deadlock.

The second half saw the home side become more of an attacking threat, but Laura O’Sullivan was on hand for the visitors to keep it all square.

Soon afterwards, Katie Jones became the hero for Cardiff as she made a terrific goal line clearance with an outstretched leg to deny Amber Pollock.

Despite the constant pressure by the hosts, it was Cardiff who took the lead.

Making her first appearance back in a Cardiff shirt, Kylie Nolan made an instant impact from the bench as she won a penalty after being brought down inside the box. Lloyd stepped up for the penalty and smashed the ball home past Poppy Soper in the Plymouth net.

Ellie Sargent came close to doubling her sides’ lead after breaking through down the right-hand flank, but Soper made a smart save to tip the ball over the bar.

In the final 10 minutes, Plymouth threw the kitchen sink at Cardiff, and they were soon rewarded with an equaliser. A free kick from the left-hand side met the head of Lane, who expertly placed the ball into the far corner of the goal.

It then went bad to worse for Cardiff as seconds before the full-time whistle, Plymouth’s Ward beat the offside trap and coolly slotted home to snatch the points away. The result for Plymouth brings them level on points with Cardiff, as the fight to avoid relegation heats up.

Cardiff City Ladies are back in action in midweek as they take on Keynsham Town, at Ystrad Mynach, in what is a MUST win fixture.
